Frequently asked questions.
Before contacting us, have a look at the more common questions.
Do you back up or store the file? Will I be able to read the file?
Recall doesn't store the actual file, only a copy of the information about the file, along with an optional thumbnail. Our goal is to provide you with overview information to see which drives are storing your backups, so you can know with confidence where they are without having to plug in a drive.
Do you store any of my data on the cloud?
For free accounts, we do not store any files on the cloud - only on your computer. Paid subscribers have the option to sync to the cloud, allowing for drive and file syncing with team members and access to future features that we believe you'll find exciting. All locally stored files are encrypted.
Can I search Recall for tags about my clips?
Currently, Recall only stores metadata that is pulled directly from the clip. We're not smart enough (yet) to know if there's a dog or a boat in your pictures. If you believe this feature would be valuable, please email us—we’re always exploring new possibilities.
How much space does Recall take up?
We've designed Recall to be incredibly small and efficient. If you're conscious about space and saving many hard drives, we recommend opting out of saving thumbnails, as these typically use more space than the file information itself.
What should I expect for the public beta?
As of August 22, 2024, we are excited to announce the launch of our public beta! You’re invited to test out Recall and share your feedback to help us make it even better. Please keep in mind that this is a beta release, so we’re actively working on resolving bugs and fine-tuning features. If you encounter any issues, don’t hesitate to send a support ticket in the app, or email tim@recallapp.com, and we’ll work on fixing them in our next update.
Please note that the public beta is currently limited to macOS and Apple Silicon computers. We plan to release a version for Windows and Intel-based Macs once the beta period concludes.
